Transformation of food systems is critical to put the world back on track to meet the SDGs by 2030. But hidden costs — and undervaluation of beneficial practices — are hampering our ability to identify the solutions needed to meet the SDGs and other critical global goals. This session will feature recent case studies to demonstrate the potential for True Cost Accounting (TCA) to guide integrated policy actions to transform food systems. Participants will build practical understanding of how to use TCA as a tangible and actionable approach to enable progress toward the SDGs and guide implementation of countries’ UNFSS National Food Systems Pathways commitments. By holistically assessing the full array of impacts, dependencies, and trade-offs from food system activities, TCA can create a roadmap for leaders toward decisions with maximum value for people and the planet.
