UN TRADE FORUM: SDG's and Climate Change

UN Environment is working with UNCTAD and other partners to make trade work for sustainable development. This first UN Trade and SDGs Forum is a platform to discuss, connect, and advance this goal. 

 Trade has been identified by the 2030 Agenda as a key tool for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. 

Also, trade affects the climate in multiple ways. At the same, climate change has a great impact upon the ability of countries to trade. Some of the challenges ahead are therefore:  How should we trade in the future, to mitigate climate change, and adapt and enhance countries' resilience to the effects of climate change? And how can the world trading system, and trade rules and policies respond to the requirements of the 21st century?  

UN Environment is co-hosting the following events:  

Third Oceans Forum: Oceans economy, climate and harmful fish subsidies 

10 September 2019, Geneva, Switzerland.

The Oceans Forum is a unique global platform to take stock, exchange experiences and present options for the implementation of trade-related targets of SDG 14 (Targets 4, 6, 7 and b) through the involvement of leading United Nations Agencies, regional bodies, government institutions and civil society organizations.

With a different focus topic each year, this year’s forum will zoom in on the oceans economy, climate, and fisheries subsidies. The Forum will provide state of the art analysis, share country experiences and identify public and private best practices in key sectors such as transport, fisheries, and tourism with the aim to propose specific actions and support policy integration to meet the trade-related targets of SDG 14. For instance, disciplining fish and related fuel subsidies as well as a sound tax policy reform can support mitigation efforts and create incentives for carbon-neutral technologies as a step towards enhancing NDCs of SIDS and implementation of the Paris Agreement.

UKRI GCRF Trade, Development, and the Environment Hub: Geneva-based launch

12 September 2019, Geneva, Switzerland

UN Environment, UNEP-WCMC, and partners will officially launch the UKRI GCRF Trade, Development, and the Environment Hub (“TRADE Hub”) in September this year. The Consortium has been selected as one of 12 Global Research Hubs by the UK Research and Innovation to conduct interdisciplinary research to solve global development challenges. Over a period of 5 years, the GPB 20 million project will generate research, and develop and promote solutions to make trade sustainable for people and the planet.

The global research Consortium under the leadership of UNEP-WCMC is the first of its kind, bringing together over 50 organizations from 15 different countries from industry, trade agencies, academia, governments and civil society. Research will focus on trends and impacts of trade in wildlife, wild meat and agricultural goods on global biodiversity and social development. The project includes work at global, and national level in the following countries: Brazil, Cameroon, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Indonesia, Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.
