UNEP will participate in the twenty-first session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF21), where Member States and partners will advance discussions on sustainable forest management, implementation of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030, forest finance, and the contribution of forests to climate, biodiversity and sustainable development objectives.
UNFF21 comes at a critical moment as countries seek to accelerate action to halt and reverse deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. Forests are increasingly recognized not only as essential carbon sinks and biodiversity reservoirs, but also as foundational assets for climate resilience, water security, livelihoods and sustainable economic development.
A key UNEP engagement during the session will be the high-level Outreach Meeting on the COP30 Roadmap on Halting and Reversing Deforestation and Forest Degradation by 2030, organized by the COP30 Presidency, the Government of Brazil and the UNFCCC Secretariat. The roadmap is being developed as an action-oriented contribution to implementation of the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement and aims to identify practical policies, financing pathways and implementation measures needed to accelerate progress toward the 2030 goal.
