UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) will convene sessions focused on data-driven methane mitigation in Latin America and the Caribbean at AmeriGEO Week, bringing together researchers, government professionals, the public and others to stimulate innovation and collaboration in Earth observation data.
AmeriGEO, the Americas Group on Earth Observations, is an initiative that promotes cooperation among countries in the Americas to use Earth observations to support data-driven decision making.
Through IMEO’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), UNEP provides governments and companies with direct alerts of satellite-detected methane emissions data to enable rapid, effective response. Several countries in the Americas have designated focal points to receive and respond to MARS notifications, helping to ensure that the data reaches the appropriate institutions for action.
A plenary session convened by UNEP’s IMEO will explore how countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are using satellite and in situ measurements to support methane mitigation efforts. The discussion will cover how governments can strengthen their collective response to methane emissions, in addition to how collaboration with organizations can foster direct action, limit the effects of climate change and improve environmental health.
Speakers will include representatives from IMEO, Latin American and Caribbean Methane Emissions Observatory (OEMLAC), the national government of Mexico, subnational government of Argentina and companies of the oil and gas sector, all of whom are working with IMEO data to advance emission reduction strategies.
A side event planned by UNEP’s IMEO will include the following programming:
- Satellite Technologies for Mitigation: An overview of cutting-edge satellite systems and their role in detecting and reducing methane emissions.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Responsibility: A look at how governments, industry and NGOs contribute to coordinated methane action.
- Scientific Contributions: Highlights from scientific campaigns measuring methane emissions, including case studies such as the National University of Colombia campaign.
- Institutional Collaboration for Impact: A panel discussion on effective coordination among national institutions, showcasing efforts by Colombia on using empirical data for methane action.
Both events will be held in a hybrid format. Visit this page for more information on how to attend.
