The 20th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF 20) will take place 24-25 February 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya. It will be succeeding a preparatory global online consultation among major groups and stakeholders planned to take place in November 2023, as well as the Regional Consultative Meetings (RCMs).

GMGSF 20 provides an open and participatory platform for civil society participation and serves as Major Groups and Stakeholders’ preparatory meeting to the 6th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6). The theme for UNEA-6 is “Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution”.

GMGSF 20 will in particular provide an opportunity for representatives from Major Groups and Stakeholders accredited to UNEP to prepare positions, statements and inputs to the UNEA-6 process, including formal meetings as well as the negotiations taking place under the Assembly. However, the Forum a such is also open to non-accredited MGS since it is a self-organised meeting.  The Forum will provide an opportunity for stakeholder representatives to engage in an exchange of views with each other, as well as representatives from the UNEP Secretariat and interested Member States.

Traditionally, the Forum has also featured an informal dialogue between UNEP’s Senior Management and Major Groups and Stakeholders ahead of UNEA-6 with the goal of presenting and discussing key points of importance identified by the civil society.

The GMGSF is self-organized by the Major Groups and Stakeholders, facilitated and supported by the Major Groups and Facilitating Committee (MGFC).
