Description

On 22 - 23 March 2018, members of the Bureaux of UN Environment Assembly and Committee of Permanent Representatives will jointly convene face-to-face in Nairobi, Kenya.

The UN Environment Assembly Bureau consists of 10 members (one President, eight Vice-Presidents and one Rapporteur), with two members representing each of the five UN regional groups of Member States. The current Bureau members have been elected by the UN Environment Assembly at its Third Session in December 2017 and will hold office until their successors are elected at the end of the upcoming Session. The mandate of the UN Environment Assembly Bureau is to assist the President in the general conduct of business of the Assembly.

The Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives consist of five members (one Chair, three Vice-Chairs and one Rapporteur), with one member representing each region. It leads the Committee of Permanent Representatives, which is composed of all accredited Permanent Representatives to United Nations Environment Programme, and its members are elected by the Committee for a period of two years.

At their meeting, the Bureaux will discuss the achievements of the Third Session of the UN Environment Assembly, as well as the challenges raised by Member States, in addition to preparations for the Fourth Session of the Assembly in March 2019.

During the 2018 Environment Assembly Preparatory Retreat, both Bureaus will strengthen their cooperation and closely collaborate on the various preparations such as deciding on the theme that need to be undertaken for the Fourth Session of the UN Environment Assembly.

The Preparatory Retreat will address the following issues:

  1. Theme of the Fourth Session of the Fourth Assembly
  2. Partnership-building in support of the preparations of the Fourth Assembly
  3. Structure of the High-Level Segment and the Committee of the Whole
  4. Outreach and visibility

Prior to the Joint Preparatory Retreat of the Bureaux and after the Major Groups and Stakeholder Consultation that took place on the 21st of March, an open meeting with Member States and Stakeholders was held. The Open Meeting with member States and Stakeholders provided an opportunity for the Bureau of the UN Environment Assembly to engage in an interactive panel discussion with Stakeholders and member States on the follow-up on the Third Session of the UN Environment Assembly and preparations for the Fourth Session of the UN Environment Assembly. Access all documents for the Open meeting with Member States and Stakeholders.
