The workforce is a key lever for transformation towards the circular economy and with cities being the economic and political leaders, this is where change is expected to happen. To tap into this potential, we need data and evidence to better understand the risks and opportunities of a circular economy transition in our cities.

Which jobs are already part of the circular economy?

Where are these jobs located?

How are these jobs distributed across sectors and how are they related to circular strategies?

The Circular Jobs Monitor provides answers to these questions by gathering and displaying data on the number, range and location of jobs that are part of the circular economy around the world. It is designed to empower local decision-makers, providing them with insights into the relationship between the circular economy and the labour market. It provides change makers with the tools to craft evidence-based strategies and policies, based on which sectors have the most ongoing circular activity and potential.

You can now explore data on circular jobs analysed using a methodology developed by UNEP and Circle Economy under a broader tri-partite partnership of Circle Economy, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, and UNEP. These insights are housed on the Circular Jobs Monitor, a digital tool that maps jobs that drive circular activities. The Circular Jobs Monitor is the first time that data linking local employment and circular economy has been made available. This evidence can be used alongside other social, economic, and environmental metrics to help cities build back better and chart a course towards a more sustainable future for their people and the planet.

We have added data on circular jobs in 148 cities from across 30 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas to the Circular Jobs Monitor. This includes cities from Quito (Ecuador) to Kampala (Uganda), to London (the UK), and to Jakarta (Indonesia).
