The First Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the GCMP Global Coordination Project took place online on 19 February 2026.
The Global Chemicals Monitoring Programme (GCMP) aims to provide scientifically robust evidence to contribute to the effectiveness evaluation of the Stockholm Convention and provide data to support the effectiveness evaluation mechanism of the Minamata Convention. It supports a comprehensive global understanding of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury concentrations in humans and the environment.
The GCMP consists of six child projects. This includes one global coordination project and five regional child projects in Africa, Asia and Pacific islands, Latin America and the Caribbean regions. Through global coordination and regional implementation, the GCMP aims to amplify the impacts beyond the sum of its individual child projects and enable a coherent system to support evaluating the effectiveness of policies and actions undertaken on POPs and mercury.
The consultation through the first SAC meeting aimed to:
- Share updates on the operational and administrative processes
- Discuss annual workplan and budget
- Discuss technical aspects of the major activities to be conducted in 2026
- Kickstart the implementation of the GCMP global coordination project.
