Overview

The Center for Earth Ethics is convening a number of independent virtual dialogues to critically examine the role faith-based organizations can bring to conversations about our food systems. These dialogues will take place as part of the broader Food Systems Summit Dialogues.

These dialogues are being organized by the following coalition of leading faith-based organizations: Bhumi Global, Interfaith Public Health Network, Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA), Parliament of the World’s Religions, the Tzu Chi Foundation, World Evangelical Alliance, and the Center for Earth Ethics.

    Themes

Biodiversity: Agriculture is one of the largest contributors to biodiversity loss around the world - including crop diversity - and threatens 86% of at risk species. It is also responsible for roughly a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions. As we look towards the Food Systems Summit and the CBD COP15, how can farming be transformed to support rather than destruct its surrounding ecosystems, and what shifts are required to make our food systems more nature positive sustainable?

Sacred Lands: Indigenous peoples and many religious traditions have cultivated a relationship to the land that understands the land cares for us even more than we care for it. How do sow values of mutuality and exchange into our food systems to respect and sustain the life the Earth provides?

Regenerative Practices: Soil around the world is being exhausted by unsustainable farming practices reliant on fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. The heavy chemical use pollutes the ground water and air having deleterious to surrounding ecosystems and wildlife. How do we integrate regenerative practices - which have demonstrated the ability to restore soil, sequester carbon, encourage biodiversity health - into our food systems?

Localization: 60% of the world’s food comes from China, the United States, Brazil, Argentina and India. How do we change markets and financing models to support local farmers to produce bioregional appropriate crops to bolster local economies and support eco-system health?

    Outcomes

    1. Highlight the real impacts our current world food systems is having on biodiversity and ecosystem health
    2. Discuss how faith can change attitudes towards our relationship with the Earth and non-human beings
    3. Educate on action items and solutions within global food systems that can restore the balance between people and the planet
