• Overview

As part of its mandate to assess and report on the state of the environment, UNEP began in 1995 the process of developing Integrated Environmental Assessments (IEAs), called Global Environment Outlooks, GEOs.  Through this process, State of the Environment Reports are produced at the global, regional, subregional, national, and municipal levels. Under the theme "Healthy Planet, Healthy People", the sixth version of the GEO (GEO-6), is an integrated assessment that urges decision-makers and citizens to apply the principles of sustainable development to help ensure that the environment of the Earth remains the basis of society and well-being, and to ensure the resilience of people. This evaluation was presented in 2019 and today has its version in Spanish.

In this webinar (the first of a series of four events), the fundamental characteristics of the GEO process will be presented, the relevance of the main findings of the GEO-6 report for the South American region and, in particular, for the Andean- Amazonian region, and the challenges of implementing effective policies in the environmental area that respond to the most pressing situations.

In addition, the most relevant characteristics of GEO-7 will be presented, as well as innovations in terms of participation and capacity building. The event will feature the participation of scientific experts in environmental issues and its main objective is to present, in a simple and evidence-based way, the main environmental challenges of the region, triggering an open and constructive discussion on the role of science and its ability to influence decision-making and the formulation of public policies.
