This report is one of the outcomes of the joint research project "Study on the Sustainability and Climate Change Adaptability of Global Biomass Resources," funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in collaboration with UNEP.

The publication provides a holistic overview of bioeconomy development. It features the whole life cycle and characteristics of bio-based products. It looks into the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of bioeconomy policies evolution in different countries and regions. It details the technical routes of main bio-based products, including bio-energy, bio plastics, bio platform chemicals, paper products, and textiles. It considers land use change, biodiversity loss, climate change and livelihood improvement of bioeconomy development. The report allows us to more accurately grasp the context of bioeconomy and provide suggestions for its future development.

This report is part of the UNEP Climate, Ecosystems and Livelihoods flagship programme, which is the 10-year strategy of the United Nations Environment Programmme – International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP). It is expected to inform various stakeholders to promote bioeconomy, including decision-makers, scientific researchers, related industry, and other interest groups.
