• Overview

This event will launch a new global guidance Safe Disposal of Unused Medicines – A One Health Approach for National Systems published by UNEP to support countries in strengthening national systems for the safe disposal of unused medicines through a One Health approach.

Improper disposal of unused medicines can pose significant risks to both the environment and public health such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Despite increasing awareness, important gaps remain in how unused medicines are managed across households, healthcare facilities and agricultural production systems.

By offering a strong foundation for policy development, the guidance provides actionable, evidence-based insights to help policymakers and stakeholders design context-specific strategies to prevent and manage unused medicines.

The event is part of a series of events co-organized by the United Nations Environment Programme in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the Geneva Environment Network, and other key partners, aiming to raise awareness and share best practices, challenges and opportunities to address pharmaceuticals release into the environment.
