Regional Consultative Meeting of the UNEP Major Groups and Stakeholders, Africa, was held ahead of the 20th Ordinary Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN-20). AMCEN-20 was hosted by the Government of the State of Libya in Nairobi, Kenya from 14 to 18 July 2025. The 20th session also marked the 40th year since the establishment of AMCEN in Cairo in 1985.

20th Ordinary Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN-20) 

Theme: “Four Decades of Environmental Action in Africa: Reflecting on the Past and Imagining the Future.” 

In line with the above theme, the Session focused on (a) AMCEN's achievements and challenges since its establishment in 1985, and (b) strengthening AMCEN to address Africa’s environmental challenges.  

The Session comprised a technical segment, a ministerial segment to adopt a declaration, decisions, and provide policy guidance on Africa’s common positions on upcoming global environmental meetings and conferences, as well as a high-level special session to celebrate AMCEN’s achievements over the last 40 years (AMCEN@40).  

The 2025 Regional Consultative Meeting, Africa 

Purpose 

The 2025 Regional Consultative Meeting (RCM), Africa provided an in-person and virtual dialogue and expert platform for UNEP Major Groups and Stakeholders, Africa, and other actors on the environment during a three-day meeting to prepare inputs for the 20th Special Session of AMCEN.
