• Overview

In 2011, the UNEP Regional Consultative Meetings (RCMs) with Major Groups and Stakeholders of civil society took place between September and December.

The RCMs provided an opportunity for Major Groups and stakeholders to prepare their inputs into the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum which took place on 18-19 February 2012 as well as the 12th Special Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum which was held on 20-22 February 2012.

KEY TOPICS

In 2011, the Regional Consultative Meetings focussed on the following key topics:

  • Rio+20 desired outcomes and the role of civil society in shaping the agenda of the Conference and influencing the Conference outcomes
  • Green economy and poverty eradication
  • Institutional framework for sustainable development (IFSD): rethinking the current sustainable development paradigm, International Environmental Governance (IEG)
  • Emerging issues likely to affect the development agenda in the next 20 to 30 years and which need to be captured at the Conference: the outcomes of the GEO-5 and UNEP foresight processes
  • Eye on Earth Summit

The consultations also serve as capacity building and networking exercises for Major Groups and stakeholders in the regions, and constitute platforms for Regional Offices to engage with Major Groups and stakeholders on an annual basis.
