The ocean, which covers more than 70% of our planet, feeds us, regulate our climate, and generate most of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean also serves as the foundation for much of the world’s economy, supporting sectors from tourism to fisheries to international shipping.

However, the ocean is threatened by climate change, plastic pollution, and marine resources' overexploitation.

Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, will host the One Ocean Summit from February 9 to 11, 2022, in Brest, France, to mobilise the international community to take concrete action to reduce these adverse effects on the ocean.

The hybrid Summit aims to raise the international community’s level of ambition on maritime issues and translate our shared responsibility for the Ocean into concrete actions.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)–the UN agency that promotes the protection and sustainable management of the world’s marine and coastal environments–will host two workshops on February 9 during the summit. The Sustainable Tourism in the Blue Economy workshop will be held from 11 am to 12.30 pm CET, and the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) workshop will be held from 4 to 5.30 pm CET.

The Sustainable Tourism in the Blue Economy workshop will explore concrete solutions and recommendations for policymakers and corporate leaders on tackling the issue of marine litter while supporting the sustainable recovery of the sector. The MPA workshop will craft a solutions-oriented action agenda centred around two main aspects: Enabling MPA benefits for nature and people and enhancing MPA coverage and performance.

On February 11, there will be a high-level meeting with Heads of State and Government, as well as leaders of international organisations, including UNEP’s Executive Director Inger Andersen, local authorities, civil society, business and finance, will focus on the protection of marine ecosystems and sustainable fisheries, the fight against pollution (mainly plastic), climate change, and ocean governance.

The Summit contributes to the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) that seeks to support transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our ocean.
