As extreme heat emerges as the defining climate risk of this decade, sustainable cooling is now a frontline adaptation priority. According to the 2023 Global Cooling Watch, without urgent action, cooling-sector emissions could reach 6.1 gigatonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2050, while more than one billion people still lack access to adequate cooling for health, food security, and economic productivity.

This 62nd UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies side event brings together government officials, technical experts, and development partners to officially launch the new NDC Cooling Guidelines, a practical roadmap for integrating sustainable cooling into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0), National Cooling Action Plans, and national adaptation strategies.

Jointly convened by the Cool Coalition and the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), the session will showcase best practices in passive cooling design, high-efficiency technologies, and climate-friendly refrigerants, spotlighting the technical, policy, and financial pathways to mainstreaming sustainable cooling as a pillar of climate resilience under the Paris Agreement’s Global Goal on Adaptation.
