🕒 13:15-14:30 hrs EDT
📅 14 July 2025 (In Person)
📍 Conference Room F, UN Headquarters, New York, USA
Organizers: UNEP, Action Initiative for the KM-GBF, Permanent Mission of Colombia to the UN
Participants will explore the interlinkages between the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) and the SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 14 on Life Below Water
The KM-GBF, adopted at the CBD COP 15, provides a comprehensive framework to achieve “living in harmony with nature” by 2050 and halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The KM-GBF aims to catalyze urgent action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and put nature on a path to recovery, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 SDGs. Its implementation contributes to the achievement of the SDGs. Implementing the KM-GBF contributes to advance SDG 14 on Life under water by, for example, promoting that marine and coastal ecosystems are maintained, enhanced or restored in alignment to Goal A of the KM-GBF, SDG 3 on health and SDG 8 on economic growth, inter alia, by using biodiversity in a sustainable manner and its contributions to people maintained, enhanced or restored, in alignment with Goal B of the KM-GBF.
Following the adoption of the KM-GBF, countries committed to setting national targets for its implementation. There is now an urgent need for countries to accelerate their efforts and to strengthen cross-sectoral understanding in the implementation of the KM-GBF. The side event aims to
- Enhancing understanding of interconnection between KM-GBF and SDGs, including the SDGs under review.
- Emphasizing biodiversity’s roles in human health and well-being, and progress made for conserving oceans/marine resources and its interlinkage to support economic growth.
- Strengthening political commitment in scaling up the KM-GBF implementation with focus on whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches.
The side event will highlight the Action Initiative for KM-GBF which aims to consolidate the political will of KM-GBF implementation and maintain the political momentum for global biodiversity conservation. It will also bring countries and major groups and stakeholders to share the best practices and challenges in the KM-GBF implementation.
