Hosted by the COP29 Azerbaijan Presidency with support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO), this interim meeting of the Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action will provide an update on the implementation and progress of the platform, including its work programme and three core action
The discussion will explore practical approaches to strengthening climate resilience through integrated water management, ecosystem-based adaptation, drought and flood resilience, climate-resilient infrastructure, watershed approaches, and transboundary cooperation. Attention will be given to identifying barriers to implementation, including financing, institutional coordination and technical capacity, as well as opportunities to accelerate action and scale solutions. It will highlight how water can be integrated into Nationally Determined Contributions, National Adaptation Plans and broader climate resilience strategies.
Specifically, the meeting will: Present progress and concrete deliverables under the Baku Dialogue work programme;
- Present case studies and best practices demonstrating how water is being integrated into NDCs, NAPs and adaptation planning;
- Contribute to the ongoing dialogue among Parties, UN agencies, financial institutions, and stakeholders on modalities for scaling up water-centred climate action;
- Strengthen the role of ecosystem-based approaches, nature-based solutions, and integrated water resources management in climate policy and implementation;
- Provide technical insights that can inform UNFCCC processes under adaptation, the Global Goal on Adaptation, and follow-up to the Global Stocktake, in the lead-up to COP31.
