The increasing recognition of Loss and Damage in global climate discussions highlights the need for a better understanding of climate-induced losses and damage and appropriate national policy responses to address them. The health and infrastructure sectors are particularly vulnerable to the climate crisis and face heightened and cascading risks that have spillover effects on countries’ economies and societal well-being.
This in-person consultation organized by the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre aims to advance the dialogue on integrating loss and damage, with a particular focus on Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD), into critical national climate policies and plans.
The consultation workshop will explore strategies for incorporating loss and damage considerations into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), Health National Adaptation Plans (HNAPs), and other relevant national policies.
Building on previous discussions, this consultation will serve as a platform to:
- Assess existing challenges in integrating NELD into national climate policies
- Exchange insights on best practices and successful case studies
- Identify actionable solutions for improved integration of loss and damage considerations.
As part of the health sector discussion, we will incorporate findings from our ongoing Stocktake of loss and damage considerations in NAPs, NDCs, and HNAPs. Additionally, the consultation will focus on mental health impacts as a critical aspect of NELD, recognizing the growing importance of psychological dimensions in climate-related losses and damages as well as Urban L&D.
