This is an official event of the Global Forum of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact.
Global Forum Milan Urban Food Policy Pact:
Every two years, mayors and officials from the over 300 member cities of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact come together in a Global Forum where they exchange knowledge and best practices on urban food policies, participate in technical workshops, network and build strategic partnerships.
In 2025, the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact celebrates its first decade of activity and, for the occasion, organises in Milan – the city where it all began during EXPO 2015 – the new edition of its Global Forum. As a key partner of the Milan Food Policy Pact, UNEP will pre-launch the Food Waste Breakthrough during the Global Forum.
Date: 15 October 2025
Time: 11.00 - 12.30 (CEST)
Description:
This joint session will highlight the pivotal role of cities in reducing food loss and waste (FLW) as a catalyst for more sustainable, resilient and inclusive food systems. Drawing from the contributions of FAO and UNEP, the session will explore practical experiences, policy insights, and collaborative approaches to advance FLW action globally. This session will be delivered under the framework of the Food is Never Waste Coalition and will also mark the pre-launch of the Food Waste Breakthrough, an initiative aiming at accelerating food waste prevention and methane mitigation in the next five years leading up to 2030.
City representatives will share lessons from on-the-ground initiatives (in markets, schools, households, restaurants), while global actors will reflect on enabling governance, financing mechanisms and partnerships. Special attention will be paid to climate mitigation co-benefits, access to healthy diets, and urban resilience.
