Executive Webinar - Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for Upstream Oil and Gas Operations

On 30 April at 13:00 Geneva time, UN Environment will be hosting a webinar on Environmental Impact Assessments (register here). This Executive Webinar introduces the goals and structure of environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for upstream oil and gas activities, identifying and describing the potential impacts to the environment and socio-economic setting, relevant mitigation and monitoring required to ensure safe and impact-free activities, alignment with best international practice and common weaknesses and short-comings of EIAs. This 90-minute webinar is aimed at practitioners in the oil and gas sector, including policymakers, civil society, academia and the public. • Dr. Matthew Richmond

Matt is a marine scientist with over 18 years working on environment issues associated with the oil and gas sector, from monitoring the seabed in the Irish Sea, the Arabian Gulf, and East Africa. He has also conducted ESIA training and contributed to ESIA Guidelines for the sector in Tanzania, and recently led an evaluation of government capacity to address oil and gas development challenges in Mozambique.

• Ms. Rita Mwadime

Rita is a Health Safety and Environment (HSE) professional with a chemical and process engineering background. Rita has over 20 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, specialising in process safety and design and implementation of HSE management systems. She is a Lead ESIA Expert involved in projects in the energy sector.

• Ms. Marisol Estrella

Marisol is the coordinator for the UN Environment – Oil for Development Partnership, where she supports on capacity building under the Environment Pillar of the OfD Programme.

The Executive Webinar is organized by UN Environment, who works in partnership with the Government of Norway’s Oil for Development Programme. While the long-term goal of UN Environment is to reduce the world’s reliance on fossil fuels to fight climate change, it is also recognized that oil and gas will remain part of the global energy mix in the foreseeable future. Ensuring that oil and gas are produced in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner and do not impact negatively on local communities are therefore an integral part of UN Environment’s work in this sector.
