The Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction and the World Resources Institute will host a joint event in the Buildings Pavilion at the launch of COP26. Over one third of the world’s global carbon emissions are generated by the buildings sector. The buildings and construction sector, as a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, must urgently be decarbonized if we are to have any chance of meeting the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5oC. To address this sleeping giant, the GlobalABC and WRI are working with national governments to commit to Buildings as a Critical Climate Solution and develop building decarbonization roadmaps to ensure these ambitious goals become reality.
GlobalABC’s Global and Regional Roadmaps for Buildings and Construction in Africa, Asia and Latin America establish pathways to decarbonization of the buildings and construction sector by 2050. Developed as a framework and a process, they present a comprehensive approach to emission reductions from the built environment along the full life cycle, with aspirational short and medium term and longer-term targets and timelines towards achieving zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction between 2020 and 2050. Similarly, the World Resources Institute launched the Zero Carbon Building Accelerator in June 2021 to support national and subnational governments in aligning their decarbonization efforts through coordinated road maps and action plans.
In this session, national ministers and mayors from Türkiye and Colombia, the first two countries to participate in the project, will share their insights on the biggest barriers and opportunities in working towards building decarbonization and sector transformation to meet the 2030 and 2050 climate goals. Partners will discuss the stakeholder engagement process and collaborating across sectors to ensure that transformative action be contextualized and impactful.
To close the session, we’ll be recognizing the countries that have increased their ambition by endorsing the Buildings as a Critical Climate Solution then open up the floor to discuss the importance of building decarbonization for their countries and globally.
