• Overview

UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) will host a series of webinars to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to measure, quantify and reduce methane emissions in the waste sector.

The webinars are part of the Nigeria Methane Emission Reduction Pilot Programme (NiMERP), a project funded by the EU Delegation to Nigeria and implemented by IMEO, in collaboration with the Government of Nigeria.

NiMERP aims to assess methane emissions across multiple sectors in the country, while building local capacity for methane measurement and mitigation. Building on its success in the oil and gas sector, NiMERP is moving forward with a series of capacity-building webinars for other methane-emitting sectors, starting with waste.

The waste sector’s methane emissions originate mainly from solid waste in open dumpsites, open waste burning, landfills, and poorly managed wastewater systems, both domestic and industrial. These emissions are largely unmanaged and unmonitored, as reliable data on waste and wastewater quantities, composition, and treatment practices are often limited.

As Nigeria prioritizes waste in its NDC 3.0, the IMEO webinars will highlight key challenges, data gaps and mitigation opportunities in the sector. This webinar is aimed at federal- and state-level government officials, industry professionals, and researchers from the waste sector in Nigeria.
