The event will feature two launch segments.
In the first segment, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) will launch the UNEP-IGF Stocktake Report on Sustainability Standards and Initiatives (SSI) for Minerals and Metals. The report provides a comprehensive review of how sustainability standards interact with public governance frameworks and identifies 15 hallmarks for assessing the credibility and environmental effectiveness of sustainability standards across the minerals and metals value chains.
In the second segment, UNEP will launch its Digital Knowledge Hub on Environmental Aspects of Minerals and Metals, mandated by UNEA resolution 6/5 on the environmental aspects of minerals and metals. It consists of a global gateway facilitating access to curated knowledge products, tools, datasets and capacity-building materials, as well as providing the infrastructure to host online communities of practice to enable peer-to-peer exchanges and multistakeholder engagement. The platform is hosted by the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership. The digital Knowledge Hub is organized around seven themes: Policies and Standards, Value Chain Aspects, Sand, Platforms for International Cooperation, Tailings, Mine Closure.
Each segment will be followed by discussant interventions and an interactive Q&A with participants on how the Stocktake Report and the Digital Knowledge Hub can support more environmentally sustainable minerals and metals management.
