There is an urgent need to change the paradigm for addressing the triple planetary crises– climate change, nature loss, and pollution. Tackling environmental problems through siloed means has proven ineffective. Efforts need to be geared towards a rapid shift to integrated approaches while maximizing coherence and efficiency of action. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness on the need and ways to strengthen coordination and collaboration between the biodiversity and chemicals and waste clusters and to trigger action for coherent implementation of MEAs and SAICM. Examples and options for action on coordination and collaboration between the two clusters at the national level will be shared as well as examples of options for action for the regional and international level. The content will draw on the outcomes of a project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers that included an expert consultation workshop organized by UNEP on strengthening coordination and collaboration between biodiversity and chemicals and waste clusters. The event also aims to facilitate discussions for the future implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the Beyond 2020 framework on sound management of chemicals and waste.
