• Overview

UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), in collaboration with Carbon Limits, will host an event for IMEO’s Methane Alumni Network on setting a target for methane emissions reduction. The first event since the network launched, the webinar will take place on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at 14:00 CET.

Methane is responsible for approximately 30 per cent of the global warming we are experiencing today. Reducing methane emissions quickly and effectively is one of the most impactful ways to slow climate change and improve air quality in the near term. This event will explore how countries and companies are translating overarching methane reduction pledges into measurable, time-bound targets.

The closed-door session will bring together alumni of IMEO’s Methane Training Series, which includes policymakers, industry representatives and technical experts from around the world, to share experiences and discuss practical approaches for developing robust methane reduction targets at both national and company levels. Participants will gain practical insights into the process of setting and implementing methane reduction targets, taking into account key considerations at policy and operational levels.

Objectives

The webinar will:

  • Highlight current practices in methane emission target setting at both national and corporate levels.
  • Showcase examples of how countries are integrating methane into their climate strategies and policy frameworks.
  • Present methodologies for corporate methane target setting, including absolute and intensity-based targets.
  • Discuss opportunities and challenges in aligning targets with regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations and climate goals.
