As part of ongoing efforts to assess and address the environmental impacts of war and support a sustainable and resilient recovery in Ukraine, partners engaged in ongoing debris management efforts will convene in Kyiv for the regular meeting of the Working Group on Asbestos Management, which serves as a platform for stakeholders involved in addressing hazardous contamination and asbestos-related debris management to align and scale-up efforts.
The meeting will serve as an opportunity for stakeholders, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), national and international partners, regional authorities and technical experts to exchange information, technical expertise, update on ongoing activities, and identify current challenges and needs in both addressing and scaling-up debris-management efforts in Ukraine.
The Working Group on Asbestos Management meets bi-monthly to advance coordination between relevant stakeholders and was established under the framework of the UNEP asbestos project, which aims to support the government of Ukraine to determine optimal approaches for managing hazardous waste, with a central focus on the safe and sustainable management of asbestos-containing debris.
The Working Group meeting will provide participants with an opportunity to stocktake and consolidate progress on national asbestos detection, handling, and disposal practices, and to align participating institutions on the next steps for implementing safe and coordinated asbestos management.
Registration is open to organizations and stakeholders engaged in debris management, and asbestos‑related projects.
