Background

Africa’s transport sector is undergoing a transformative shift toward electric mobility, driven by rapid urbanization, climate commitments, and innovative local solutions.

With countries like Ethiopia banning petrol/diesel car imports and Morocco emerging as a battery manufacturing hub, the continent is poised to lead in sustainable transport. However, challenges such as charging infrastructure gaps, financing barriers, and policy fragmentation remain.

Co-hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA), the Africa E-Mobility Forum is the continent’s flagship policy platform for accelerating this transition. The Forum builds on the success of its 2024 edition, where the participants experienced the first fully electric BRT in Africa when it just started operations.

Now in its third edition (learn more about the first edition here), the Forum will convene at the Africa E-Mobility Week & Forum 2025 (AEW2025), the continent’s largest e-mobility gathering, to align stakeholders on actionable pathways for zero-emission transport.

Overview

As the policy anchor of AEW2025, the Forum will bring together African governments, investors, industry leaders, and civil society to:

  • Advance policy harmonization for e-mobility across African nations.
  • Unlock investments in resilient charging infrastructure and local manufacturing.
  • Showcase scalable solutions, from battery swapping to electric 2/3-wheelers.
  • Amplify equity-focused initiatives, including women- and youth-led mobility innovations.

Key Themes

  1. Policy & Governance: Strengthening regional cooperation and regulatory frameworks.
  1. Financing & Infrastructure: Mobilizing capital for grid resilience and EV adoption.
  1. Local Innovation: Spotlighting African-led solutions (e.g., Spiro’s battery-swapping networks).
  1. Just Transition: Ensuring inclusive access to clean transport jobs and services.
