UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is organizing a capacity-building workshop on reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector in Iraq.
The event is bringing together key government stakeholders from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Oil, as well as representatives from National Oil Companies, including engineers and technical experts from Basrah Oil Company (BOC), Basrah Gas Company (BGC), Midland Oil Company (MdOC), North Oil Company (NOC), Oil Projects Company (OPC), and Missan Oil Company (MOC), among other professionals from the oil and gas sector in Iraq.
The workshop covers topics including methane emission sources, detection and measurement technologies, and mitigation strategies, providing participants with practical knowledge to identify, quantify, and reduce methane emissions.
Participants will also gain a deeper understanding of IMEO’s flagship initiatives, including the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), which provides alerts when satellites detect major methane emission events, and the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0, the only comprehensive reporting framework for methane emissions reporting in the oil and gas sector.
The training builds on the strong collaboration between IMEO and Iraq through MARS, under which Iraq has established two government focal points and more than 11 focal points across national oil companies and other Ministries. These focal points actively support methane monitoring and response efforts and have contributed to several methane mitigation actions. By bringing together the nominated focal points and key stakeholders, the workshop will further strengthen ongoing methane monitoring, reporting, and mitigation efforts while enhancing Iraq’s readiness to engage with OGMP 2.0.
