UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is organizing a workshop to strengthen national and provincial capacity for reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector in Argentina, alongside the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Hosted by the Government of the Province of Neuquén, the event will bring together representatives from Argentina’s seven provinces and the country’s major oil and gas producers, as well as technical experts, policymakers, regulators and representatives from international oil companies.
The workshop will teach participants how to use IMEO tools to achieve methane emissions reductions:
- The Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) issues alerts to countries and companies when satellites detect major emission events, enabling swift climate action.
- UNEP’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0 establishes a five-tier framework for reporting methane emissions, increasingly improving the accuracy and granularity of measurements.
Through a combination of technical presentations, dialogue and interactive exercises, participants will explore emerging data sources and the practical applications of empirically verified methane data. The workshop will also foster discussion on regulatory frameworks; the use of remote-sensing technologies in Argentina, with a particular focus on provincial needs; and global standards in regulations, institutional coordination and international collaboration to advance effective methane management.
