• Overview

UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is convening a technical capacity-building workshop on methane emissions management in Mexico, in collaboration with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and hosted by Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). The workshop is designed to strengthen participants’ capacity to reduce methane emissions.

The workshop will bring together stakeholders from SEMARNAT, the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC), the National Industrial Safety and Environmental Protection Agency (ASEA) and the Mexican National Oil Company (Pemex), as well as national researchers.

Offered through IMEO’s Methane Training Series, the workshop will cover topics such as:

  • sources of methane emissions,
  • detection and measurement technologies and
  • available mitigation solutions.

Participants will leave the training with a stronger understanding of where methane emissions come from and how they can use measurement-based data to reduce emissions. The workshop will also emphasize the importance of integrating empirically verified data into decision-making processes and fostering collaboration across institutions to support methane mitigation at scale.

The workshop builds upon IMEO’s ongoing engagement with Mexico, from supporting scientific research in the country to enabling swift climate action through IMEO’s Methane Alert and Response System, which issues alerts when satellites detect major emission events. The session will advance the objectives of the Global Methane Pledge, of which Mexico is a signatory and UNEP’s IMEO a core implementing partner, empowering the country to deliver on its commitment to climate action and its role in advancing the global effort to reduce methane emissions.
