Have you ever considered the impact of your daily decisions? Our future depends on the actions we take today. By 2050, the global population is expected to reach a staggering 10 billion, leading to increased consumption across food, fashion, travel, and more. Two to three billion of these new citizens will be young consumers who will play a critical role in shaping sustainable consumption patterns.
UNEP is accelerating progress towards a healthy planet and shared prosperity by promoting sustainable lifestyles and consumption to enable us to live better and lighter in a 1.5-degree world. The concept of 1.5°C lifestyles emphasize how individuals, governments, and businesses consume and the need to transform our consumption patterns. By reducing and minimizing waste, adopting reuse and recycling practices, we contribute to circular economy growth and lessen our carbon footprint.
The Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) is advancing regional implementation of sustainable lifestyles as well as initiatives promoting circularity in high impact sectors.
The Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) is actively advancing the implementation of sustainable lifestyles. In Europe and Central Asia, GO4SDGs works with universities to empower youth to embrace sustainable 1.5-degree lifestyles. In 2022, a partnership with the Kazakh-German University launched "Green Nudges" initiatives and research projects to encourage positive behaviour change. This collaboration also led to the creation of the Sustainable Lifestyles University Network (SLUN) in 2023. This network, which currently includes over 25 universities primarily from Central Asia, fosters knowledge sharing and promotes sustainable practices on campuses.
As the demand for knowledge and capacity-building in sustainable living and related areas like food, mobility, housing, and leisure (including consumer goods and tourism) increases, the Sustainable Lifestyles University Network continues to grow.
