Global Workshop “From NIPs to Implementation”

The Global Workshop “From NIPs to Implementation” of the UN Environment/GEF Projects “Global project on the updating of National Implementation Plans for POPs” and “Global project on the updating of National Implementation Plans for POPs – add on to umbrella FSP project” was organized by UN Environment/Chemicals and Health Branch in collaboration with the Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in Uruguay and, held from 23 to 24 October 2018 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Objectives: The meeting aim was to disseminate lessons learned and good practices identified within the National Implementation Plan development, update and implementation processes at national level, share the information on main findings and identify national and regional opportunities to implement Stockholm Convention. As the meeting outcomes feed into the implementation of the UN Environment/GEF medium size project “Integrated SC toolkit to improve the transmission of information under Articles 07 and 15”, the meeting was organized back to back with the official launching of this project.

Organizers: UN Environment/Chemicals and Health Branch in collaboration with the Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in Uruguay

Target audience: Stockholm Convention National Focal Points and National Implementation Plan development and/or update coordinators, representatives of BRS Secretariat, UN Environment, Basel and Stockholm Conventions regional centres and non-governmental organizations.

Outcomes: The meeting participants welcomed the document “From NIPs to Implementation: Lessons learned report (Draft)” and found it very useful from the perspective of the lessons learned and good practices presented, as well as of mapping out the remaining challenges to be addressed.

The report drafters took note of the proposals for improvement/revision of the report made by participants and will consider it as to finalize the report.

Some countries announced will provide additional case studies (Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). These will be contacted by UN Environment/Chemicals and Health Branch as to decide upon the length and substantive matters to be included in the case studies.

The report chapter on challenges, as well as the results of the group work carried out during the workshop, will be further explored and potential project proposals will be considered.
