Background

UNEP Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) and the Principles for Responsible Banking Academy (the PRB Academy) share a common goal of providing opportunities for banks and bankers to develop their professional capabilities and to play a positive role in banks. The PRB Academy, as a unique accelerated blended learning platform, targets to upscale circular practices and achieve a sustainable and socially just future, realizing the promise of the Agenda 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Paris Agreement.

The Academy is a collaboration between the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEPFI), the German Agency for International Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Chartered Banker Institute, the world’s oldest professional body for bankers.

In view of the growing need for second-tier banks capacity building to contribute to the climate adaptation agenda and the circular economy, the GO4SDGs and the PRB Academy are collaborating to develop and deliver training programmes that use UNEP FI’s Principles for Responsible Banking as a foundation to help banks support societies goals in the region of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan).

The activities are carried out in close cooperation with the Union of Banks of Kyrgyzstan. The PRB Academy plans to become more localized by looking at market needs for skills and specializations compared to high-impact areas and important regional development tasks. It is expected that the suggested training programme will potentially have a long-term and significant effect on economies’ greening and the creation of green jobs in high-impact sectors with finance flows that are better aligned with the national green economy's needs.

Objectives

The main objective of the Round Table is to promote the establishment of the PRB Academy in Central Asia as a Center of Excellence in providing educational courses within the sustainable finance agenda through sessions both online and in-person, accommodated at the Training Centre of the Union of Banks of Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan).

The above will be achieved through:

  • Understanding the UNEP FI approach and best practices on responsible banking;
  • Presentation of desk review and recommendations, designed to identify needs and gaps in capacity development of Central Asian banks with a focus on principles of responsible banking and financial market development towards sustainability;
  • Tailor-made discussion of desk assessment conclusions and recommendations with the feedback provided on the substance of suggested training modules and format/frequency of trainings delivery.

Participants

Central Asian representatives of public finance authorities, second-tier banks, civil society organizations from five Central Asian countries, and international organizations.

The event will be held in hybrid mode. Simultaneous Russian-English translation and recording will be provided
