About
Indonesia will officially launch the “Growing Resilience through Emissions Reductions, Community Empowerment and Ecosystem Restoration for a Nurturing Future” (GREEN for Riau) initiative, a province-wide forest conservation and sustainability programme in Riau, Sumatra. Supported by the UN-REDD Programme, implemented by UNEP and FAO, and funded by the United Kingdom, the initiative aims to reduce deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening sustainable forest management and inclusive livelihoods. The event brought together government officials, UN representatives, and local stakeholders to co-develop a strategic vision for REDD+ implementation aligned with Indonesia’s Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (ENDCs) under the Paris Agreement. GREEN for Riau will enhance REDD+ readiness, enable access to Results-Based Payments (RBP), and promote equitable benefit sharing, all while supporting the region’s transition to a resilient, low-emission future.
The launch event will feature key remarks the Indonesian Minister of Forests and Minister of Environment, UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia, the Governor of Riau and the Deputy Ambassador of the UK Government to Indonesia and Timor Leste. Objectives of the event include strengthening multi-stakeholder governance, aligning policy frameworks with national and global climate goals, fostering private sector engagement, and building technical capacity for monitoring and safeguards.
