UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) will host a technical workshop on methane emissions in Astana, Kazakhstan, in collaboration with Environmental Defense Fund and Carbon Limits.
The four-day workshop will bring together technical experts, government officials and industry stakeholders from across Kazakhstan to build their knowledge and capacity for monitoring and mitigating methane emissions. Mitigating methane emissions is the fastest, most cost-effective way to slow short-term global warming as we decarbonise.
Reductions are most readily available in the fossil fuel sector, including from oil and gas – as well as metallurgical coal, known as met coal, which is used in steelmaking.
The workshop features two specialized trainings:
- A coal mine methane training will deepen participants’ understanding of methane emissions from met coal mining and present best practices for methane measurement, reporting and mitigation.
- A training on satellite data will focus on using satellite observations to detect, monitor and reduce methane emissions. Participants will learn how to explore this data through IMEO’s Eye on Methane data platform and how satellite data can inform operational and policy decisions. The training will also provide hands-on training with UNEP’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), which uses satellite data to detect major emission events and notifies governments and companies of opportunities to reduce emissions.
The workshop marks an important step in advancing Kazakhstan’s methane management efforts and the objectives of the Global Methane Pledge, of which Kazakhstan is a signatory and UNEP’s IMEO a core implementing partner, empowering the country to deliver on its commitment to climate action.
