• Overview

Through the European commission funds, UNEP supported the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) to carry out a capacity building workshop on Eco driving for freight vehicle operators along the Northern Corridor. The Northern Corridor is a multimodal trade route linking Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda.  This eco driver training was highlighted as a key thematic area of intervention and provides part of implementation of the Northern Corridor Green Freight Strategy launched in 2017 with CCAC/UNEP support.

The workshop, which was held between 6-10 December 2021 at Pride Inn Flamingo Beach Resort was opened by the Chair of the Kenya Transporters Association, Mr. Newton Wang'oo, who underscored the importance of eco-driving. He emphasized that it is the more economical way of driving with road safety and environmental benefits. In fact, recent research has highlighted that Eco driving can improve fuel consumption by an amount ranging from 15% to 25% which translates to significant economic savings and climate emissions abatement.

More than fifty (50) heavy commercial truck operators were taken through both theoretical aspects and practical training on eco driving. This will further advance NCTTCA’s aims of cutting emissions of Particulate Matter (PM), black carbon emissions and Oxides of nitrogen (NOX) grams per ton-km by at least 10% and reduction of CO2 emission intensity grams per ton-km by 10% by 2021.
