Background
The State of Qatar became a Party to the Minamata Convention on Mercury on 4 November 2020. In September 2024, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), launched the development of the Minamata Initial Assessment (MIA) to support the implementation of the Convention in Qatar.
The draft MIA was subsequently prepared through consultations with relevant stakeholders, and by assessing national mercury use, emissions, and releases, as well as reviewing existing policy and regulatory frameworks. The final stakeholder consultation workshop is scheduled to take place on 14 December 2025, as the MIA process nears completion
Objectives of the Workshop
- Present the final draft of the MIA report and collect feedback from stakeholders
- Facilitate open dialogue among stakeholders to promote mutual understanding, strengthen collaboration, and build commitment to the action plan outlined in the MIA
- Enhance stakeholder awareness of the assessment findings and foster a deeper understanding of Qatar’s mercury management landscape to support effective implementation of the action plan
Participants
The workshop is designed for technical staff from line ministries and national agencies who are involved in the sound management of chemicals and mercury management in the State of Qatar.
