This first-of-its-kind African workshop will bring together participants from 15 African countries implementing national e-mobility projects supported by UNEP, four regional and sub-regional African supra-national bodies, global partners including academia, international organizations, existing initiatives and alliances active in the field of sustainability of EV batteries, the EV industry in the global north and from the African continent as well as International organizations & financing institutions.

The objective of this workshop will be to kick-start a discussion around used EVs, battery end-of-life & circularity on the African continent with a focus on how to:

  • Ensure only good quality used EVs will be allowed to come to Africa;
  • Support repairability of EVs on the continent;
  • Introduce Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and other mechanisms for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) or vehicle importers for end-of-life EVs and batteries;
  • Develop standards and guidelines for the collection, preparation, and transport of end-of-life EV batteries for:
    • local reuse of the EV batteries (e.g. for energy storage or for re-assembly of new battery packs based on used cells);
    • recycling and reintegration into global EV battery value chains;
    • and safe disposal of waste materials.

This workshop will be the starting point of a consultative process on how to deal with battery end-of-life in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). UNEP’s electric mobility programme will build on the outcomes of this Africa workshop to set-up a new Global Partnership on Used EVs, Battery End-of-Life & Circularity in LMICs
