Support to chemicals and wastes MEAs and SAICM implementation in Kenya

Project Story

Efforts are underway towards sound chemicals management in Kenya

Project Summary

This project aims to serve as a catalyst for the implementation of activities that will facilitate the meeting of Kenya's 2020 goals on chemicals and waste management. Furthermore, these activities will promote the meeting of Kenya's obligations as they relate to the Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions, to which Kenya is Party. Special emphasis will be placed on engaging with industry and the private sector in manufacturing, use and disposal of chemicals during the implmentation of the project.

Project Objectives

The project will undertake the following measures:

  • Establish a chemical MEAs unit within the Ministry of Environment and National Resources;
  • Support and follow up on the scientific and technical elements of SAICM implementation as well as to provide policy briefs for the chemical MEAs;
  • Support a multi-stakeholder committee, to articulate issues that require cross sectoral coordination to help remove barriers, promote development of fiscal incentives and disincentives and share data and information on SAICM;
  • Coordinate MEA implementation among key institutions that deal with chemicals and waste;
  • Establish a chemicals and waste database;
  • Start a responsible care program among Kenya enterprises led by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers.
