Description:

The Republic of Mozambique is located in East Africa, with over 60% of the population living on the coast. It is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in Africa due not only to its physical location, but also the socio-economic issues that amplify the negative effects of climate change and decrease the population’s capacities to cope and adapt. However, the country also hosts many natural resources and ecosystems that offer multiple goods and services to the local populations, including services and benefits for adapting to climate change.

This project aims to reduce the vulnerability of urban and peri-urban communities in the Greater Maputo Region (home to 3 million people) to current and future climate risks by addressing the degradation of ecosystems - and their services - and enhancing the capacity of communities to adapt. The project will do so by strengthening the capacity of municipal and district authorities to plan and implement ecosystem-based adaptation, restore mangrove and riparian ecosystems, promote climate-resilient livelihood, diversify economic activities, and increase the available knowledge and public awareness on the benefits of ecosystem-based adaptation interventions.
