UNEP Events At NAP Expo 2023

#

The NAP Expo 2023 kicks off on Monday 27th March in Santiago, Chile. If you're attending, look out for the following events hosted by UNEP and partners:

Scaling Up Implementation of Climate Adaptation Through National Adaptation Plans

When: Monday 27 March at 4:00pm-5:30pm (GMT-3)
Where: Best Western Premier Marina Las Condes, Chile
Hosts: UNEP, UNDP, NAP Global Network
Online access: Link

As of March 2023, 42 countries submitted their National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) as a means of identifying medium- and long-term adaptation needs. The global focus is increasingly shifting towards how these plans are being implemented. The objective of this session is to facilitate knowledge exchange among country representatives on emerging experiences in scaling up adaptation through the NAP process, identifying relevant tools, frameworks and lessons learned. The session will be building on some of the discussions that took place during a similar session at NAP Expo 2022, titled From Planning to Action: NAP Implementation for a climate resilient development.

Enhancing Synergies Between Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction: A Comprehensive Risk Management Approach

When: Tuesday 28 March at 11:00am-12:30pm (GMT-3)
Where: Best Western Premier Marina Las Condes, Chile
Hosts: UNEP, UNDRR, Adaptation Action Coalition, Risk-informed Early Action Partnership

Addressing the climate emergency requires effective mitigation, adaptation and disaster risk-reducing actions. It is critical to guard against risk-blind planning, particularly to avoid maladaptation, and a comprehensive approach to risk management is therefore needed. This session will provide key recommendations on the benefits, needs, challenges and opportunities for expanding integrated planning and implementation on adaptation and disaster risk-reduction. The event will explore key questions, such as: why is an integrated approach to disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation important? what are some good practices across countries for integrated approaches? What advantages does integrated planning offer?

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning in the Context of Global Processes and Reporting Progress on NAPs

When: Wednesday 29th March at 2:00pm-3:30pm (GMT-3)
Where: Best Western Premier Marina Las Condes, Chile
Hosts: UNEP, UNDP, NAP Global Network

Most countries are developing monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems to track progress under their NAP process. However, actively tracking the implementation of NAPs and reporting on the progress can be challenging as different MEL systems coexist at the national level with limited resources. This session will enable the sharing of perspectives, experiences and lessons learned on MEL from NAPs in the context of global processes such as the Global Goal on Adaptation. The session will provide an overview of MEL systems for adaptation in global processes and explore why NAP progress reporting is important for the NAP process.

Transformative Adaptation Actions in the Agriculture and Land Use Sectors

When: Wednesday 29 March at 4:00pm-5:30pm (GMT-3)
Where: Best Western Premier Marina Las Condes, Chile
Hosts: UNEP, UNDP, FAO

Countries have recognized the importance of agriculture, land use changes, and food security in their climate adaptation efforts, with 95% of updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and 100% of submitted NAPs including agriculture and food security as a priority. This session aims to respond to this growing recognition. Participants will hear about good practices and increase their understanding of practical steps on how to adopt a climate-resilient food security perspective throughout the NAP process, looking at the development of a knowledge sharing platform by the Climate Resilient Food Systems Alliance (CRFS).
