Press Release

28 November 2018 - The United Nations Environment Programme released this week its annual Emissions Gap Report. The report showed that world’s original level of ambition needs to be tripled to stay within 2°C warming and increased around fivefold for the 1.5°C scenario. A continuation of current trends will likely result in global warming of around 3.2°C by the end of the century, with continued temperature rises after that.

Press Release
  • It is still possible to keep global warming below 2°C, but the technical feasibility of bridging the 1.5°C gap is dwindling.
  • Global CO2 emissions increased in 2017, after a three-year period of stabilization.
  • If the emissions gap is not closed by 2030, it is extremely unlikely that the 2°C temperature goal can still be reached.

Changing weather patterns are disrupting hard-wired animal and plant reproduction systems with unpredictable consequences for biodiversity.

In the northern hemisphere, climate change is causing spring to arrive earlier. We know this from reliable climate records dating back to 1880 and in some cases earlier than that. Herbarium records are turning out to be a huge source of important plant data.

Abu Dhabi, UAE –The Global Adaptation Network held its 2nd Forum last March. Convened in UAE, the event brought to light various issues in adaptation and constituted the first event to contribute to the Talanoa Dialogue, an ongoing global discourse on climate change. Since then, the Forum has been feeding into climate policy on a global scale, and last month, the UNFCCC’s Bonn Climate Conference used findings from the event to enrich its own discussions and negotiations.

During the Bonn Climate Conference last November, the audience were captivated by the words of Timoci and Shalvi, Fiji's youngest climate ambassadors. Their stories brought to life the devastating effects of climate change, and urged leaders to take ambitious climate action to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future.

The Global Adaptation Network has been working to expand the Talanoa Dialogue, a form of participatory and inclusive discussion on climate change, aiming to share experiences, ideas and skills through storytelling.

Climate change adaptation in Indonesia will in large part focus on flood and drought prevention, and food and water security in relation to this. Some of the adaptation strategies that will be of most benefit to Indonesia include infrastructure reinforcement to gain resilience and robustness when faced with floods or droughts, the establishment of early warning systems, sustainable and adaptive farming practices and disaster insurance.
