Persistent Organic Pollutants

Sound chemical management for a safer future
UNEP GEF

When chemicals and wastes are soundly managed, the benefits support the implementation of many, if not all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All UNEP GEF Chemicals and Waste projects are mapped to the relevant SDGs: to know more, read the UNEP GEF Chemicals and Waste Impact document.

Highlights

75 countries developed, reviewed and updated their National Implementation Plans (NIPs) under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

UNEP is a world leader in the global monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), with technical expertise in the management and elimination of hazardous substances like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Through its work on DDT, UNEP has supported countries to soundly manage and dispose of DDT and to promote safer alternatives in disease vector control, progressing the targets of the UNEP DDT Road Map.

Through its PCBs projects, UNEP contributes to the efforts of the PCB Elimination Network (PEN). The PEN develops and implements awareness-raising strategies to put PCB elimination back on the international agenda.

Sound management of DDT and PCBs

The project Demonstration of Non-thermal Treatment of DDT Wastes in Central Asia improves national and regional capacity for the sound management of hazardous waste, including DDT and other POPs, in a region with legacy chemicals.

The project Disposal of PCB Oils Contained in Transformers and Disposal of Capacitors Containing PCB in Southern Africa works to reduce environmental and human health risks from PCB releases through environmentally sound management of PCB.
