Enhancing national capacities, reporting and synergies between Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata Conventions and SAICM for the sound management of chemicals and waste in Georgia
Project Summary
The project aims to strengthen institutional capacities of the Government of Georgia and consolidate synergies between the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, the Minamata Convention and SAICM by improving cooperation between relevant government departments and agencies, industry, academic and civil society organizations. This will be facilitated by enabling national authorities responsible for the sound management of chemicals and wastes to adhere to the requirements of the chemicals and waste related instruments. The project will increase inter-sectoral coordination and information exchange which in turn will allow for an increase the overall national capacities in the areas of civil safety and protection for the handling of risks arising from chemical products and hazardous wastes.
Project Objectives

- creating a permanent inter-agency working group on waste and chemicals management and facilitate necessary national arrangements and consultations for ratification of Minamata Convention;
- undertaking a comprehensive gap analysis on coordination for sound management of chemicals and provide package of legal amendments on chemicals and waste management with due gender consideration;
- establishing an integrated database as a new mechanism to systematize joint information and data gathering and sharing; and
- conducting awareness raising and capacity-building activities including training-of-trainers on SAICM and implementation aspects of BRS and Minamata Conventions
