Japan Funded Project

UNEP
Japan Supplementary Budget (JSB) Projects on Sustainable Plastic Waste Management

About the project:

UNEP-IETC is leading global action to tackle the escalating plastic pollution crisis by turning plastic waste from a problem into a valuable resource. Mismanaged plastic is polluting our rivers, oceans, and landscapes, harming wildlife, disrupting ecosystems, and even entering our food and water as microplastics. Plastic production and waste are also driving climate change. The world can no longer afford a “take–make–dispose” model — we must shift to a circular economy where plastics are reused, recycled, and valued.

Through international partnerships, innovative policies, and new technologies, the UNEP is supporting countries to rethink how plastics are produced, used, and managed. Based in Osaka, Japan, the International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) provides hands-on expertise in sustainable waste management, supporting communities to turn waste challenges into opportunities. With support from the Government of Japan through the Japan Supplementary Budget (JSB), UNEP-IETC is driving real, on-the-ground solutions — from community-led recycling systems to innovative small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) business models  — to build a world free of plastic pollution where materials flow in a truly circular economy.

Under this framework, UNEP-IETC has implemented the following projects:

  • JSB 2022 - Sustainable Plastic Waste Management: Strengthening policy, infrastructure, and stakeholder capacity for environmentally sound plastic management
