UNEP-IETCの使命は、途上国と経済の過渡期にある国々に対して環境上適正な技術の利用を促進することです。2011年以降はその使命を廃棄物管理のための技術に特化し、関連する政策や経済的な側面も勘案して事業を進めています。2012年にUNEPの決定によりIETCが廃棄物管理に関する地球規模の優秀なセンターとなる使命も与えられました。
