Country Status

Bangladesh submitted its updated NDC in August 2021, increasing the conditional 2030 emissions reduction target to 89.47 MtCO2e and the unconditional one to 27.56 MtCO2e. Compared to the previous NDC's objectives, this corresponds to ambition increases of close to 150% (conditional target) and 130% (unconditional target).

The new NDC further elaborates on the implementation measures to address climate change impacts and improved adaptation issues, covering energy (incl. power, transport, energy use in industry, residential, commercial, agriculture and brick manufacturing, F-gases and fugitive emissions), industrial processes and product Use (IPPU), agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) and waste sectors as climate action focus areas . Moreover, the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) is currently under development to elaborate on the medium and long-term priority climate adaptation measures.

Bangladesh is particularly exposed to the impacts of climate change, notably riverine floods, storm surges, and sea-level rise, due to its geographical characteristics. To mainstream climate-smart practices into national development planning processes, climate change has been integrated into a number of national polices and plans. The country has developed mid- and long-term climate-related initiatives and plans, such as the National Solar Energy Roadmap 2021-41 and the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100. Further, the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan developed under the Climate Vulnerable Forum aims at mobilizing financing, especially through international cooperation, for implementing renewable energy and climate resilience initiatives.
