Fumiko Nakao is the Principal Coordination Officer in charge of Japan Biodiversity Fund, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. She has had the privilege of working in biodiversity management for over three decades. Her career began as a civil servant with the Ministry of the Environment. She worked on project finance as part of the Global Environment Facility team, and later played a role in developing the Satoyama Initiative concept and its partnership at the United Nations University. She also served to represent Japan in various key forums, such as Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, Convention on Wetlands and Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
She has a master’s degree from University of Guelph and a bachelor’s degree from University of Tokyo. She is married with two children.
