Biography

Hongpeng Lei has been working on climate and energy for over two decades.

He is currently serving as the Chief of the Mitigation Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Climate Change Division. In his capacity, he is managing UNEP’s activities related to energy and climate change mitigation, providing strategic leadership in developing and managing the overall programme.

Prior to joining UNEP, he served as the Global Director of Climate at the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), overseeing its global portfolio on cities, transport, buildings, air quality, super pollutants, and cooling. He also led CIFF’s regional teams and programmes in East and Southeast Asia.

Prior to this, he was the Director of the Energy Program in China for the World Resources Institute, focusing on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and low carbon city planning and demonstration. Previously, Hongpeng led WWF China’s climate and energy team and its Low Carbon City Initiative. He also worked on building energy efficiency and green buildings in the Chinese government, where he gained extensive experience in the building sector.

He sat on the Board of the Energy Foundation China, a strategic international philanthropy re-granter pursuing clean energy, a safe climate, and sustainable prosperity. He was also a board member of C40, a global network of cities taking united action to confront the climate crisis. He also chaired the Steering Committee of Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership, a multi-donor partnership formed by governmental and philanthropic partners to accelerate sustainable energy transition in the region.

He obtained a Master’s Degree in Management Science and Engineering and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Construction Management from Tianjin University, China.
